James O'Keefe busted

James O’Keefe is known for his investigative journalism, which effectively exposed ACORN for what they are. Unfortunately, even people who do good work make bad choices.

A conservative activist who posed as a pimp to target the community-organizing group ACORN and the son of a federal prosecutor were among four people arrested by the FBI and accused of trying to interfere with phones at Sen. Mary Landrieu’s office.

Activist James O’Keefe, 25, was already in Landrieu’s New Orleans office Monday when Robert Flanagan and Joseph Basel, both 24, showed up claiming to be telephone repairmen, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten’s office said Tuesday. Letten says O’Keefe recorded the two with his cell phone.

Flanagan, the son of acting U.S. Attorney Bill Flanagan in Shreveport, and Basel asked for access to a phone at the reception desk. Then they asked for access to a phone closet so they could work on the phone system. The men were directed to another office in the building, where they again said they were telephone repairmen.

They were arrested later by the U.S. Marshal’s Service. Details of the arrest were not available. A fourth man, Stan Dai, 24, was also arrested, but Letten’s office said only that he assisted the others in planning, coordinating and preparing the operation.

Federal officials did not say why the men wanted to interfere with Landrieu’s phones or whether they were successful. Landrieu, a moderate Democrat, declined comment Tuesday. She has been in the news recently because she negotiated an increase in Medicaid funds for her state before announcing her support for Senate health care legislation.

Michelle Malkin writes:

But for now, let it be a lesson to aspiring young conservatives interested in investigative journalism:

Know your limits. Know the law. Don’t get carried away. And don’t become what you are targeting.

Good advice. Here’s the thing: The fact that O’Keefe screwed up doesn’t suddenly exhonerate ACORN. What O’Keefe exposed was still fact. We have seen it with our own eyes.

The long dormant ACORN Twitter account has resurrected itself to gloat, and ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis will be on the Ed Show to no doubt deemphasize the work that O’Keefe did. Unfortunately, the damage is done for ACORN.

I really think it’s irrelevant, overall. The guy did something really, really stupid. Yeah, he should be punished. But for the Left to celebrate as if all the wrongs of ACORN are now righted is just ridiculous. Get a grip. They’re not any less corrupt now than they were this morning. Sorry guys.

Transparency is just not their thing

No matter which side you are on, it’s pretty easy to see that the White House’s message of transparency has been, somewhat, well, hard to decipher. Matt Kibbe wrote about a few of the back door deals and the behind the scenes nature of the health care debate.

Despite the transparency rhetoric, promises of an open conversation and a ban on lobbyists in the White House, there have been murky-at-best explanations for documented White House visitors. President Obama pledged not to work with lobbyists. So, naturally, lobbyists just delist, and voila! No more lobbyists in the White House. Which unfortunately, doesn’t make them any less of a lobbyist… just a lot more illegal.

Lobbyists are nothing new. The issue is that for a campaign that ran so vehemently on not working with lobbyists and special interests, they seem to be more than happy to blur the lines when it benefits their cause. But what makes a lobbyist a lobbyist?

The Lobbying Disclosure Act (LDA) defines a lobbyist as a person who spends more than 20% of their time on “lobbying activities” and has had more then one “lobbying contact”. Pretty simple. What constitutes a “lobbying activity”? Time spent on lobbying contacts, as well as any planning, prep time, research, coordination, and dirt digging. A “lobbying contact” is any communication, oral or written, with federal officials regarding policy modification, formulation and adoption. That goes for legislation, government officials, government contracts, and nominations subject to Senate consent.

Andy Stern, a known lobbyist who delisted in 2007, has taken his share of heat. He appeared on the White House visitor log 22 times last year for meetings with President Obama, Joe Biden, Rahm Emanuel, and Peter Orzag. News articles also report meetings with House members and Senators.

Apparently not the brightest bulb, Stern also reported his meetings on Twitter. The Alliance for Worker Freedom and Americans for Tax Reform collected tweets from February to June that mention White House meetings, visits with Congressmen, and lobbying with Mayor Bloomberg.

Here is a clip from an interview with Stern:

“I don’t care if I went there once, or if I went there every single day, they would say it’s too much. That’s because they have a different vision of America than the people I work with every day.”

The assumed access to the White House is an incredible display of arrogance.  They never thought they would be denied access. This is what happens when everything is negotiable and promises mean nothing. Washington is doing what it wants, and the less we know the better.

Transparency redefined: We’ll actually show you nothing, and then say that the reason nothing is working is because of the Republicans. Those Republicans and their silly “Constitution” and “procedures”. That is all that stands between you and utopia, people.

Did anyone actually think recovery.gov would be accurate?

Really, who thought their goal was to actually hold the government accountable? It was a sham from the get go.

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: The chairman of the Obama administration’s Recovery Board is telling lawmakers that he can’t certify jobs data posted at the Recovery.gov Web site — and doesn’t have access to a “master list” of stimulus recipients that have neglected to report data.

You don’t have a list of those who haven’t reported? That’s because they never bothered setting up a real committee to monitor where the money went. Gee, who saw that one coming?

I wish I could be shocked and astounded that they haven’t done their jobs. I wish it was totally baffling that they would make up districts that don’t exist to account for stimulus money… but anyone who was paying attention to the way this stimulus atrocity was structured could see it coming back in February. There were no controls. There was no oversight. The absurdly patronizing Recovery.gov site was never intended to be an accountability tool – it’s there to make the American public feel better about their support for the disaster their President pushed through.

This is predictable, but no less embarrassing. Yay for government efficiency!

The Chicago Smackdown

So the Olympics won’t be in Chicago. Excuse me while I recover from my heartbreak.

Here’s the thing: our mission is not to bring down Obama. Our mission is to support free markets, personal liberty, and accountability. This movement isn’t about Barack Obama the man. This is about what he stands for, which is big government, higher taxes, and less personal responsibility. We can’t look at one specific incident and rejoice that the world has “seen the light”.

No matter how much fun it may be… because it is fun.

The bigger issue here is what it could mean in terms of our place in  the rest of the world. His Presidency was touted as a new era in foreign policy. We saw images of people rejoicing around the world when he was elected and subsequently inaugurated. He was supposed to be the new face of the United States, and win back all the enemies that Bush made. He’s not doing that.

He was the first President to ever go make a plea of this kind regarding the Olympics. In my opinion, it was inappropriate, but whatever, I could have overlooked it. As Ed Morrissey said earlier today, it was surprising that he even went without having it locked down. It seems he was setting himself up. Which doesn’t make sense, until you look at it this way: Losing the Olympics was good for Obama.

The ever brilliant Melissa Clouthier hypothesized in an earlier conversation that it was a win-win situation. Obviously, if it went to Chicago, all of his cronies win. The US gets the Olympics. Everyone’s happy.

However, even if he lost, Obama’s goal has never been to strengthen our country’s place in the world. America is  no better than anyone else. Now that we’ve lost the event, he can save face and have us not look like the imperialist, self important bastards he thinks we are.

Smooth.

Just another $292 Million

It hurts my heart a little to admit that $292 million doesn’t sound like a whole lot right off hand. But it IS a lot of money. And another NYC scumbag has bilked the banks. Meet Hassan Nemazee.

A federal grand jury charged Hassan Nemazee, a New York businessman who has ties to prominent politicians, with defrauding banks of $292 million in part to benefit the Democratic Party.

Mr. Nemazee, 59 years old, used the proceeds of his scheme to donate to campaigns and political-action committees, according to an indictment made public Monday, though the amount allegedly spent on these efforts wasn’t specified. The donations helped him rise to become finance chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, among other major roles.

A spokesman for the Democratic National Committee said the DNC, Obama for America, and the Presidential Inaugural Committee, which organized President Barack Obama’s inaugural festivities, would donate to charity $61,700 of contributions Mr. Nemazee made during the 2008-09 election cycle.

So to summarize what actually happened, Nemazee faked documents to get loans, and hit three major banks since 1998. It sort of sounds like a movie plot, doesn’t it? I’m envisioning Nick Cage playing a con man living the Manhattan playboy style life. Anyway, last month, he owed $142 million to Bank of America and $75 million to Citibank. He got busted for the Citibank fraud, and what did he do? Borrow the money to repay them from someone else, naturally. He his HSBC bank next to repay Citibank.

So what does someone do with that kind of money?

Mr. Nemzaee, who has long ties to former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as other party leaders, also allegedly used illegally obtained money to donate to charities and buy a yacht and property in Italy, according to the indictment.

For more than ten years, Hassan Nemazee projected the illusion of wealth, stealing more than $290 million so that he could lead a lavish lifestyle and play the part of heavyweight political fundraiser,” Preet Bharara, the new U.S. attorney in Manhattan, said in a statement.

That’s right. Raise even MORE money for the Democrats. Well played Nemazee. And now, you’re in jail.

Teeny Tiny Fringe Minority in Washington.

If you stayed at home and watched the news this weekend, you may not have heard about the teeny tiny fringe of angry protesters that showed up in Washing, DC this weekend. Because there was very little coverage. Just look at the minuscule crowds these nutjobs are trying to pass off as legit!

Freedom Plaza at 9:15am on 9/12.

Freedom Plaza at 9:15am on 9/12.

All snark aside, I showed up at Freedom Plaza at 9am on Saturday. The crowds began on the trains, where 4 stops out from the city, they were so full no one could even fit on them. Here was our car:

Metro ride into the city on Saturday morning.

Metro ride into the city on Saturday morning.

I can not even explain to you what it felt like to see that many people. Throngs of people poured in from all surrounding train stations. There were 450 bus permits issued, and bus loads of people from all over flooded the square. We hung around Freedom Plaza for a while. It was completely inundated with people. When it got to the point that we couldn’t move across the streets anymore, they started marching us out – an hour an a half early.

The march begins.

The march begins.

Arriving at the Mall.

Arriving at the Mall.

We pushed our way through the crowd and made it to the stage, where Smart Girl Politics was supposed to be introduced onstage at the rally. Teri Christoph, Rebecca Wales and I made it to the stage and waited. What an amazing vantage point!

Me, next to Teri, Twittering furiously. The cell service was seriously fubared, and I got congestion messages all day long on my Blackberry.

During her speech, Blackburn relayed the status of the city: the expressways were shut down. Buses were still coming. Trains were still overloaded. She claimed 1.5 million people were there.

There has been a lot of discrepancy about the number of people that actually attended. Some of the controversy was enhanced by me, and Michelle Malkin. I heard everything from a couple hundred thousand to 2 million on the ground, and I reported what I was told by staffers and officials.  FreedomWorks misquoted ABC, which lead to all sorts of drama. The bottom line is this: there was a metric crapload of people there. Here’s a timelapse video of the march, from an aerial perspective:

So however they want to slam me or Michelle Malkin for the numbers, it doesn’t matter. I don’t much care. If they’re going to burn resources on mincing words and hard numbers, then let them. The photos and videos were there. Here’s Jimmie Bise’s take on it.

The most fun moment of the day? Doing line kicks on stage with the other girls while Lloyd Marcus sang “2010″. The view from the stage was breathtaking – and the energy was infectious. I’m the short one behind him at the beginning.

All in all, it was the most incredible event I’ve ever attended.

As my new friend Mommentator said, I would do this day over and over again.

More Astroturfing! Except… it's the Lefties again.

From Hot Air:

A Hot Air reader working at a non-profit received this RFP from the Ohio chapter of UHCAN, the organization behind the Health Care for America Now counter-demonstrations at town-hall forums, where volunteers are trained to disrupt and shut down dissent. With elected officials escaping their constituents and fleeing back to the Beltway, UHCAN Ohio wants to start Astroturfing churches:

Request for Proposals

UHCAN Ohio is looking to engage in a short term contract with a person who has a background in working with faith communities in the Southwest Ohio area, primarily Cincinnati and its suburbs. The purpose of the contract is to engage faith community leaders to communicate with their congregations about the movement for national health care reform. We want to provide them with materials that will assist them to talk about the moral issues involved in the lack of health care for a large portion of our population, and the desire to do it during this great debate on health care in this country.

The health care reform work of UHCAN Ohio, and the coalition it staffs, Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage can be reviewed by going to www.ohioconsumersforhealth.org or www.uhcanohio.org

Deliverables:

1. Prepare a packet of materials with input from the OCHC leadership team that can be used by faith-based leaders and can be easily copied and distributed to faith leaders. Such materials are available from the Faithful Reform in Health Care web site, but may need to be supplemented with other materials and you may need to search further than the FRHC website. The packet should also be able to be posted on-line on the UHCAN Ohio and OCHC websites, with links to the appropriate original sites.

2. Reach out to forty faith congregations in the Cincinnati area and its suburbs, asking their faith leader to communicate to his/her congregation about federal health care reform in a religious/moral context. This will require face to face or at least individual phone conversations with pastors/leaders asking them to preach on the subject, or to carry out a discussion within the congregation, or to sign on to a letter to policymakers. We need a success rate of at least 33 percent. It will also involve providing them with the materials that will fit their situation.

In preparing a proposal keep in mind that because individual congregations respond to the instructions/directions they receive from their denominational leadership, this project will involve becoming familiar with the directives that have already been developed by regional or state offices of the various denominations and the various faith traditions, and probably conversations with key denominational staff to determine what is the most effective way to work within anyone denomination.

Time-Frame: End of August through October, frontloading the project so much of the contact initiation happens in late August, early to mid September.

In preparing a proposal please specify the number of hours and rate/hour required to carry out these deliverables. The contractor will be responsible for all expenses such as phone calls and mileage, so please build that into your rate. Expenses for copying materials will be borne by UHCAN Ohio.

Please submit a proposal to Kathleen Gmeiner, Ohio Consumers for Health Coverage Project Director, UHCAN Ohio, 404 S. Third St., Columbus, Ohio 43215. Questions may be directed to [redacted].

The proposal deadline is 5 PM Monday August 24, 2009.

Holy crap. How blatant can you be? ” Reach out to forty faith congregations in the Cincinnati area and its suburbs, asking their faith leader to communicate to his/her congregation about federal health care reform in a religious/moral context. This will require face to face or at least individual phone conversations with pastors/leaders asking them to preach on the subject, or to carry out a discussion within the congregation, or to sign on to a letter to policymakers”. In other words, get pastor’s to preach the wonders of Obamacare to their congregation.

Now, first of all, let’s look at the surface hypocrisy of the situation. How many times have we been called astroturfers for the past six months or so? Ever since the Tea Parties began, accusations from the left have been flying in from every angle regarding the nature of the protests. We’ve been quick to dismiss them, but it’s becoming more and more apparent that the reason they are so quick to assume is that, well, they don’t understand organic protests because the never have them. They are the professionals.

On a more fundamental level, I have a huge problem with churches addressing health care legislation. So does the government, but I suppose that they’d be quick to overlook the violation of non-profit tax status that comes along with endorsing legislation from the pulpit if it worked in their favor.

Any church in their right mind would run screaming from this legislation. We do not need federal support for abortions. You’d also be hard pressed to find a congregation of any denomination, Catholic or Protestant, that would overlook support for euthanasia or embryonic stem cell research.

The language used when addressing congregations is also, erm, troublesome. “In preparing a proposal keep in mind that because individual congregations respond to the instructions/directions they receive from their denominational leadership“… what are we, sheep? It is immediately followed by this: “This project will involve becoming familiar with the directives that have already been developed by regional or state offices of the various denominations and the various faith traditions, and probably conversations with key denominational staff to determine what is the most effective way to work within anyone denomination.” Infiltration. Figure out how to best market to the evangelical demographic.

Leave the churches alone. Just stop. This is not appropriate.

Trust This Face.

Sorry. I know, I choked a little too.

Pelosi’s poll numbers are tanking. Duh. That’s a gimme. She can’t get anything together. Congressional disapproval ratings are at 60%. Individually, her unfavorables are at 48%. Her favorables are lower than *gasp* Sarah Palin’s. Her approval ratings have dropped 12 points in a month.

But Nancy is tough. It doesn’t bother her that people don’t like her, because she’s answering a higher calling. Or something.

Mention of the “trust” question halted the click-clack of Pelosi’s heels against Rotunda marble, and she turned to face the reporter who posed the question. “I don’t know about ‘trust’ — I think I’m trusted,” she said. “I certainly want to be trusted. I’m not particularly concerned if I’m liked.”

Side note: Does this make you laugh as much as it made me laugh? Seriously. Princess Pelosi, making a turn on her heel and keeping a straight face while she said that she thinks people trust her? Even the people that WORK for her acknowledge the damage done by the CIA debacle, while she was lying through her teeth. I have visions of Pelosi sitting with her plastic surgeon, constructing her “sincere” face. And then getting taxed an extra 10% for it.

“Our leadership team is so effective it is driving Republicans to distraction. And they and their allies have decided that I am their target, and they come after me relentlessly — relentlessly. On the left, I have to put forth a bill that’s going to fund the war and the rest, and they’re not happy about that. So none of it is a popularity contest. You just have to be responsible for the job you’re setting out to do.”

Doing the job you’re setting out to do. Like taking care of your constituents? Doesn’t that mean doing what’s best for them, Nancy? If you’re passing horrible legislation that not only tanks the country but pisses off the people that put you in office, how is that doing your job? Unless you don’t actually answer to them.

In addition, there are a LOT of things distracting Republicans right now, Birthers among them, but call me crazy if I don’t consider the Speaker of the House undermining the CIA and recklessly strongarming support for bad legislation a distraction. She is right about one thing: she is a target, but not for the reasons she thinks. It’s because she is on the front lines of what we are trying to change in Washington.

Napolitano: Oops!

(H/T Hot Air)

Napolitano FINALLY admitted that DHS screwed up on the Right Wing Extremism report that was issued last month.

A contentious “Rightwing Extremism” report that warned of military veterans as possible recruits for terrorist attacks against the U.S. was not authorized, has been withdrawn and is being rewritten, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told Capitol Hill lawmakers.

“The wheels came off the wagon because the vetting process was not followed,” Ms. Napolitano told the House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday.

“The report is no longer out there,” she said. “An employee sent it out without authorization.”

Wait, huh? Remember when she defended the report? Right. About that. Just kidding! It SHOULDN’T have been sent out. Just an oversight. And naturally, “appropriate action” has been taken with the employee… IE, there was another bump under the tires of Team Lightbringer’s bus.

Feel like a warning shot to anyone else?

The Obama Administration? COERCION? Surely You Jest.

So we’ve been hearing about the Chrysler demise for weeks. Bankruptcy rumors. Ugly negotiations. 18 financial firms, including those that specialize in failing businesses, have rejected the ridiculous plan put forth by the Obama administration.

From the NY Times:

In a rare flash of anger, the president scolded the group Thursday as Chrysler, its options exhausted, filed for bankruptcy protection. “I don’t stand with those who held out when everyone else is making sacrifices,” Mr. Obama said.

Chastened, and under intense pressure from the White House, the investment firm run by Mr. Weinberg and Mr. Perella, Perella Weinberg Partners, abruptly reversed course. In a terse statement issued shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, Perella Weinberg Partners announced it would accept the government’s terms.

Government + Private Industry = Red Flags. This is exactly why.

Later in the same article:

But now that Chrysler has tipped into bankruptcy, some industry executives worry the administration will try to turn this episode to its political advantage. Washington, these people contend, needed some political cover for the mess in Detroit — and Wall Street provided a handy scapegoat.

Wait, you’ve GOT to be kidding. I’m floored. They’re not just out to save the poor auto-industry from the struggling economy? You mean, there are ulterior motives? They’re going to use this to their POLITICAL ADVANTAGE?! The naivete is just unbelievable sometimes.

And then of course, there’s the fact that all the financial institutions are under the thumb of the Feds now as a result of all the “assistance” they’ve received. The Treasury has offered to drop $2.25 billion to buy off senior lenders. That is, of course, under the condition that they forgive the majority of the debt. Lenders have argued that they would receive more than that under normal bankruptcy proceedings.

The Times points out:

But this is no ordinary bankruptcy. JPMorgan Chase and other large banks involved in the negotiations are, to greater and lesser degrees, beholden to Washington. Many have received billions of taxpayer dollars, as well as other generous subsidies. For the banks, defying the administration was never a serious option, according to people close to the talks with lenders, who asked not to be identified because they had signed confidentiality agreements.

Gee, who saw this one coming?
