GOP: Standing in the way of Utopia.

Because clearly they’re entirely too accomodating to dissenting viewpoints.

If anything, the Democrats’ problem is that they permit too much dissent—unlike the Republicans, who demand “lockstep marching.” In fact, if Democrats would learn to be just a little less tolerant of dissent, they might get a lot more done.

Yeah, they just get STEAMROLLED. Poor little Democrats, bullied by the Republicans over and over again. Like that time they kept the House floor open to make sure that Republicans also had time to speak. Or maybe that time they took the time to hear the concerns of the public on the stimulus package before it was rammed through.

Or maybe when they listened so closely to concerns about health care. They were SO RECEPTIVE to widespread concern that President Obama didn’t have to go on TV 4 times a day for an entire 3 month stretch to say the SAME THING over and over. Republicans were just bastards who didn’t bother offering any other plans.

Uh, right. (Side note: I need a sarcasm font desperately.)

They have done everything in their power to silence protesters and dissenting voices. Period. The media coverage has been laughable.

They have a 60 seat supermajority in the Senate. They have a 70 seat advantage in the House. They have a President who is willing to ram through as much horrible legislation as possible. They don’t need one Republican to accomplish anything. Not one nasty little GOPer has the ability to stand in the way of the their Utopian society under Team Lightbringer.

I have no patience for the pity game. Man up, lefties. You have the power to do whatever you want. You claim the the whole world wants your version of America. In the words of our President, “the stars have aligned”. Why aren’t you making this happen?

Democrats are realizing that their constituents don’t want them to support these proposals. They’re risking their jobs by consistently casting “yes” votes for bad bills. We are the ones that hired them. We have the ability to fire them.

WE are the ones standing in their way- you, me, and everyone else who has voiced their opposition. Keep holding their feet to the fire.

Obama's Revival of the Republican Party

Upside of this administration: We all thought the GOP was dead. And slowly, they’re remembering what it means to be a Republican. Stacy Mott has said, and I’ve often quoted, that Obama is currently the leader of the conservative movement.

Let’s face it, he’s done more to mobilize us than anyone else has. The numbers from the 9/12 march, and at rallies across the country, have proved that this is more than a fringe contingent of the right. Despite what any media source would have you believe.

Ben Stein writes:

You have named men to office so wildly irresponsible, so extreme in their positions, so vulgar in their means of expression, that they have made the Republican Party regain its of gleam of gentility and good graces. I am not talking only about the tough guy/ballet dancer Rahm Emanuel, who screamed like a jilted drunken sorority girl at GOP leaders after Joe Wilson’s outburst (itself a disgrace) last Wednesday night.”

He has brought more energy and conviction to Republicans and the right than I thought possible six months ago. So, for that I thank you, President Obama. You are exposing the flaws in liberal policy faster than anyone else in recent history has been able to – even Jimmy Carter.

A few months ago I’d given up on the party. Now, I see a glimmer of hope. I see Sen. Jim DeMint and Rep. Marsha Blackburn and Rep. Mike Pence turn out for the 9/12 rally, and say the things that conservatives have been dying to hear from their Congressmen.

Granted, there are those that still need to be held accountable. There are those that I still have no use for. McCain adviser Mark McKinnon said this last week:

Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and other Republicans, said there is an “opportunity for Republicans” to tap into legitimate fears about an overreaching federal government. But he said that “right-wing nutballs are aligning themselves with these movements” and are dominating media coverage.

“It’s bad for Republicans because in the absence of any real leadership, the freaks fill the void and define the party,” McKinnon said.

So now we’re not only extremists, nut jobs, a mob, racist, etc… but one of the men who was supposed to be one our side refers to us as “freaks”. McKinnon, maybe if there were a leader who did his job and stopped pretending to be a Democrat to appeal to both sides, we wouldn’t have an absence of leadership. The fact that we don’t have a real leader tells me two things:

  1. This is a movement of the people. This is bottom up. This is grassroots. There is no top down organization happening – anyone paying attention knows there ISN’T anyleadership.
  2. The former leaders have been pushed aside, because we have decided that they don’t represent us. And I’m good with that.

I can honestly say that at this moment I’m grateful Barack Obama won the election, if for no other reason than to get us off our butts and force us to pay attention. I have very little faith that John McCain would have done a better job… and Republicans would still have been taking the blame. If Obama is the fall out from 8 years of Bush, I would hate to see what the fall out would be if another Republican screwed things up. The rapidfire legislation and the grandeur of this administration has provided a stark contrast, and put things in perspective for many.

For the first time, I say thank you, President Obama. You’ve given us the wake up call we needed to mobilize.

Teeny Tiny Fringe Minority in Washington.

If you stayed at home and watched the news this weekend, you may not have heard about the teeny tiny fringe of angry protesters that showed up in Washing, DC this weekend. Because there was very little coverage. Just look at the minuscule crowds these nutjobs are trying to pass off as legit!

Freedom Plaza at 9:15am on 9/12.

Freedom Plaza at 9:15am on 9/12.

All snark aside, I showed up at Freedom Plaza at 9am on Saturday. The crowds began on the trains, where 4 stops out from the city, they were so full no one could even fit on them. Here was our car:

Metro ride into the city on Saturday morning.

Metro ride into the city on Saturday morning.

I can not even explain to you what it felt like to see that many people. Throngs of people poured in from all surrounding train stations. There were 450 bus permits issued, and bus loads of people from all over flooded the square. We hung around Freedom Plaza for a while. It was completely inundated with people. When it got to the point that we couldn’t move across the streets anymore, they started marching us out – an hour an a half early.

The march begins.

Arriving at the Mall.

We pushed our way through the crowd and made it to the stage, where Smart Girl Politics was supposed to be introduced onstage at the rally. Teri Christoph, Rebecca Wales and I made it to the stage and waited. What an amazing vantage point!

During her speech, Blackburn relayed the status of the city: the expressways were shut down. Buses were still coming. Trains were still overloaded. She claimed 1.5 million people were there.

There has been a lot of discrepancy about the number of people that actually attended. Some of the controversy was enhanced by me, and Michelle Malkin. I heard everything from a couple hundred thousand to 2 million on the ground, and I reported what I was told by staffers and officials.  FreedomWorks misquoted ABC, which lead to all sorts of drama. The bottom line is this: there was a metric crapload of people there. Here’s a timelapse video of the march, from an aerial perspective:

So however they want to slam me or Michelle Malkin for the numbers, it doesn’t matter. I don’t much care. If they’re going to burn resources on mincing words and hard numbers, then let them. The photos and videos were there. Here’s Jimmie Bise’s take on it.

The most fun moment of the day? Doing line kicks on stage with the other girls while Lloyd Marcus sang “2010″. The view from the stage was breathtaking – and the energy was infectious. I’m the short one behind him at the beginning.

All in all, it was the most incredible event I’ve ever attended.

As my new friend Mommentator said, I would do this day over and over again.

Pink Elephant Pundit Exclusive: Interview with Congressman Jeff Miller

Bright and early this morning I had the opportunity to speak with one of the most conservative members of Congress, Rep. Jeff Miller. Here’s what he had to say.

Congressman Miller, thank you so much for taking the time to talk to me this morning.

My pleasure.

I read last weeks press release regarding electronic medical records for veterans. Health care for those who serve our country has an issue that I know has been close to your heart and you’ve shown a really sincere concern for both the taxpayers and our veterans. How are you working toward making sure a solution is found for both parties?

I think the most important thing for the veterans is to be able to stop the circle that they go through trying to find their medical records, and that’s why I feel like an electronic record is the way to go. Unfortunately the Dept. of Defense and the VA software do not communicate with each other, so we have to find a way to integrate them to allow that individual that goes into the service to carry that medical record with them until the day they die. That way we will have more efficient benefits to offer them as they get into retirement age. It’s not going to be cheap, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be able to pursue it and find the right answer.

Absolutely, and that efficiency also benefits the taxpayer right?

Well it certainly does, because what happens now is you have a backlog of cases where people are just chasing paper all over the VA and if they had a single card – I mean, why can’t we do a system similar to an ATM where a veteran goes into any facility in the country, basically swipes their card, and all their medical records can be brought up. Not necessarily kept on that card, but kept in a central repository, if you will. Use that card and they can pull up their records, images, x-rays, medications that they’re taking anywhere in the country.

On another note, the president essentially seized control of the auto industry in a lot of ways. He all but fired their CEO and board of directors, and pledged to back all of GMs warranties. How did Republicans in Congress let this happen?

Well, number one, President Obama happens to be the President, and the Democrats control the Congress. The President unfortunately is taking a lot of power out of the Presidency in areas that we never expected the president to even try to wield some of that power. We knew the Democrats were going to exert power when it came to the budget, when it came to raising taxes, when it came to spending, but when you talk about getting involved in private industry and making decisions as to the leadership of those industries, not to mention going in and changing contracts after the fact and actually taxing people for contracts that were made prior to even this administration coming in to office. I’m not surprised at the overreach. We need to do what we can to soften that blow, and make sure that the American people know that this is not the direction that the United States needs to go.

Absolutely. So what’s priority number one there, for you personally?

Me personally, it’s working with the GOP and making sure that our alternative budget gets out to the American people, that they understand that no, not like the Democrats that tried to label the GOP as the party of no, we actually have an alternative budget that goes out and lays out a very clear blue print between the President and the Republicans. We think, certainly, that what the President and the Democrats are trying to do is spend too much, tax too much, and borrow too much, and too much of anything is a problem. We look at the graphs that show where the Democrats are going with spending in this country, it’s just unbelievable.

It is unbelievable. We spoke with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann back in January, and she expressed fear that Congress would immediately start pushing through the enormous spending bills and Big Labor agenda items, and obviously that’s exactly what we’ve seen. Is there any hope for a spending slow down, or do you think this pattern is just going to continue?

Unfortunately, it’s going to continue for a while, because I think the Democrats feels like this is the way that we need to go in order to get this country back on track. The problem is that we are hamstringing our children and our grandchildren in the future, and we’re setting ourselves up for a huge tax increase. This idea that the top one or two percent can carry this load as far as the tax burden is ridiculous, it is going to have to come down to the middle class. President Obama I don’t think is being very honest with the American people in saying that he is not going to raise taxes on them, because this is the only way that this is going to be paid for. This cap-and-trade issue that he’s got in his sham budget right now – what a lot of people don’t know is that he’s got really a place filler in his budget, we haven’t seen the actual document yet, but he does have a $650 billion hole for medical expenses for the American people in health care costs, and he’s trying to cover this with a new tax on energy, which of course taxes everybody.

Yes. That’s something that I’ve been writing about lately, and something that I think a lot of people are shortsighted on. In this time that we claim to be looking out for the American people, it seems silly that they’re so willing to cover health care and then charge twice as much for energy.

Well, and again, this is something they don’t understand. When they go flip the switch on at their house to turn on their lights, they’re going to find that they get an energy tax. When they turn on the heat in their house in the wintertime, they’re going to get hit with an energy tax. There is no way that the President and the Democrats can fund this budget that is coming forward without reaching down into the pockets of Middle America. These are the very people that bought into the idea of hope for the future, and unfortunately it’s a false hope.

Absolutely. It’s scary. So I have to ask, have you heard much about the Tea Party Movement happening?

Absolutely! I have heard of Tea Parties happening all over the country, of course the big day April 15th coming up. There are a lot of people that are using that particular date to make their voices heard. I think it is exciting. We had, on an airplane coming to Washington on Monday, I actually had an individual come up to me and tell me they had their tea bags ready to go. It is definitely being talked about, not only here in Washington and on Capitol Hill, but throughout the country.

Absolutely. We have hundreds of cities participating in this now – there’s been a huge response to it. So there is buzz about this in Congress?

There’s buzz about this on Capitol Hill, without question.

Are you going to be able to make it out to the one in Pensacola?

I would like to, we’ll see what my schedule says, right now I’ve got a full day that day, but if I can plug in even just a short visit I’m going to do it.

Awesome, we would love to have you out. Congressman, thanks again, so much for your time. Hopefully we’ll be able to touch base again to get an update on your efforts. Is there anything else you’d like to cover before I let you go?

No, that’s great, it was good to talk to you.

Thank you so much.

Michele Bachmann Rocks

Okay so I love her. She’s one of the first women that SGP decided to throw their support behind, and I’m so glad there are women like her out there in our government.

First of all, she started The Majority Tracker.  The Majority Tracker is her blog, tracking the 111th Congress. She provides a detailed account of all the inside stuff, letting us know how they’re spending our money. Thanks to Brodigan for bringing this to my attention, because it’s great. Go add it to your blogroll and reader.

Just to add to her awesomeness, she did an interview with us last week, which has been posted on the main SGP site, but I figured I’d re-post some highlights here in case you missed it:

Conservatism is not dead, no matter how much the main stream media, liberal elites, and others may want it to be – it just needs to be reignited. Republicans squandered our opportunity to lead our country for decades to come because we threw conservative policies and principles aside in place of big government programs and spending. Plain and simple, we governed like liberals. Spending skyrocketed, the size of government multiplied, the debt grew, and the conservative ideals Republicans came to power on were left by the wayside.

AMEN.

The partisanship of the White House doesn’t scare me half as much as the partisanship of the Democrat leadership in the Congress. I expect that they will look to seize this opportunity to ram through enormous spending bills, Big Labor agenda items, and liberal social policies.

Just look at the first couple of weeks of the 111th Congress: The Senate pushes through its land grab; both houses push through massive changes to employment law that benefit no one but trial lawyers; the so-called $825 billion stimulus package is rushing into law. This is likely only a preview of the next two years.

So clearly she rocks.  And we need more of her in Congress. You can read the rest of the article here.

She hit the nail on the head in that first comment. We governed like liberals. There was nothing conservative about Bush’s fiscal policies – and that is the image of “conservatives” the country is left with. It was embarrassing, and gave people a very good reason not to like us. We basically became a pro-life version of the Democrats, and we have so much more to offer than that!

Congress is going to be the scariest part of the next 4 years. I have said before that I think Nancy Pelosi is one of the most dangerous people in power right now – and she’s two heartbeats away from the presidency. We need to keep track of everything they do. Tell them how you want them to spend YOUR money.

I’ll make it easy: Here’s Pelosi’s number: (202) 225-4965.

Help minimize the damage of the next couple years, and let’s start doing the legwork to make changes for 2010.  Support people like Michele Bachmann. This starts now.
