Pajamas Media posted a video yesterday of a new World Wildlife Foundation ad which depicts planes flying into buildings. It was pulled from YouTube, but they saved a cached version and it was made available again. Click here to watch it.
Basically, it’s the most tasteless 9/11 related ad I’ve seen – and I don’t think their timing was accidental. The 8th anniversary of 9/11 is next Friday, and it’s no mistake that this was released in concordance with that. They were going for the full emotional impact, and they got it.
I think it’s totally inappropriate to use any combination of planes and buildings in an advertisement anyway. The footage of those planes still makes me uncomfortable, and I want to keep it that way. Downplaying the event and turning it into an environmental awareness ad is inexcusable.
Remember back in 2008 when the anti-smoking thugs released this last year?

Yeah. 9/11 is NEVER a good advertising tool. I really don’t care how powerful the imagery may be, advertisers, this is a huge taboo.
